The Power of Praying In Tongues

The Power of Praying in Tongues | A Sermon by Pastor Jason Mayfield

In this video, Pastor Jason Mayfield brings a powerful and practical teaching on the power of praying in tongues—what it is, why it matters, and how you can receive it today. If you’ve ever had questions about the baptism of the Holy Spirit or felt stuck when it comes to speaking in tongues, this message will clear the air and set you up to receive.

The Biblical Foundation

Pastor Mayfield dives into Acts 8:4-17, where Philip brings the gospel to Samaria. The people receive the Word of God, miracles are happening, demons are being cast out, and joy is filling the city. But then Peter and John show up—not to re-preach the gospel, not to perform another healing crusade, but to lay hands on people to receive the Holy Spirit.

The takeaway? Receiving the Holy Spirit is a distinct and necessary experience. Just like the believers in Acts, many Christians today have received Jesus but haven’t yet stepped into the power of the Holy Spirit.

What Happens When You Receive the Holy Spirit?

When people receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the evidence is praying in tongues. Pastor Mayfield explains that tongues is not just a side effect—it IS the power.

He references Acts 1:8—"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you"—and teaches that the power is in the ability to pray in an unknown language. Why? Because according to 1 Corinthians 14:4, when you pray in tongues, you build yourself up. It strengthens your spirit, gets your mind out of the way (1 Corinthians 14:14), and allows the Holy Spirit to intercede perfectly on your behalf (Romans 8:26-27).

Debunking the Myths

Pastor Mayfield also takes time to address common misconceptions about praying in tongues:

"Do I already have the Holy Spirit?" – If you’re saved, yes! But praying in tongues is a distinct experience that activates a new level of power and intimacy with God.

"Will I lose control of myself?" – No. God won’t hijack your mouth. You have to step out in faith and speak as He gives you the words.

"Is tongues a real language or just gibberish?" – It’s a real, unknown language given by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2). Some people have even been recognized by native speakers!

"Do I have to feel something dramatic?" – Not necessarily. Receiving is often more normal than spectacular—like stepping into a warm pool instead of being hit by lightning.

How to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Pastor Mayfield makes it clear: receiving is simple. You don’t have to beg, plead, or wait 10 years for God to move. If you are hungry for the Holy Spirit, you can receive right now!

1️⃣ Believe that it’s for you. The promise of the Holy Spirit is available to every believer. No exceptions.

2️⃣ Come with expectation, not doubt. If you pray, “Lord, if this is real, give it to me,” you’re already in unbelief. Come expecting to receive.

3️⃣ Step out in faith. The Holy Spirit gives the utterance, but you have to speak. Don’t overthink it. If you sense syllables forming in your spirit, let them out.

4️⃣ Let go of fear. The Holy Spirit is a gift, not a trick. God is not trying to embarrass you—He’s trying to empower you!

God Is Moving Right Now

Throughout this message, Pastor Mayfield shares powerful testimonies of people receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit and experiencing breakthrough, healing, and supernatural encounters. And the same can happen for you.

If you’re ready to receive, take a moment right now—pray, worship, and let the Holy Spirit move in your life. This is your moment.
