Sermon Summary: "Everything You Need to Know About Hearing from the Holy Spirit"

In this video, Pastor Jason Mayfield delivers a bold, engaging, and deeply practical message on how to hear from the Holy Spirit. Many believers know that God speaks, but few understand how to recognize His voice. This message bridges that gap, offering clear, biblical teaching on what it means to receive a word from God and how to position oneself to hear Him clearly.

The Shunammite Woman’s Three Restorations

Using 2 Kings 4, Pastor Mayfield unpacks the story of the Shunammite woman, a biblical figure who experienced three supernatural restorations:

  1. A Child Despite Barrenness – She and her husband had wealth but no children. When she made room for the prophet Elisha, he spoke a word, and God gave her a son.

  2. Resurrection Power – That same son later died suddenly, but through the word of the prophet, he was brought back to life.

  3. Complete Financial & Property Restoration – Due to famine and economic hardship, she lost her land for seven years. But when she returned, the king not only restored her home but also repaid everything she had lost.

Pastor Mayfield points out that her breakthrough came not just from faith, but from proximity to the prophetic. She made room for a word from the Lord, which ultimately led to supernatural restoration. The takeaway? Believers today need to position themselves to receive and recognize God’s word for their own lives.

How to Actually Hear from the Holy Spirit

Rather than offering vague encouragement about needing a word from God, Pastor Mayfield systematically breaks down how the Holy Spirit speaks and how believers can recognize His voice.

  1. Step One: Recognize How the Holy Spirit Speaks

    • John 14:26 makes it clear: The Holy Spirit brings to remembrance what Jesus has already said.

    • Hebrews 1 reinforces that God speaks to His people through Jesus, and because Jesus is the Word, that means the entire Bible is how the Holy Spirit communicates.

    • Bottom line: If someone is looking for a word from God, they need to start with Scripture.

  2. Step Two: Build the Holy Spirit’s Library

    • If the Holy Spirit primarily speaks by reminding believers of the Word, then they must fill their minds with Scripture.

    • While sermons and podcasts can be helpful, they often cycle through the same familiar verses. For deeper revelation, believers need direct exposure to the full counsel of God’s Word.

    • The best method? A systematic Bible reading plan. Pastor Mayfield recommends reading the Bible in one year or even three months to develop a strong, Spirit-led understanding of Scripture.

The Challenge: Take Pentecost Home

Pastor Mayfield concludes by emphasizing that the power of the Holy Spirit is not just for church services—it’s for daily life. True revival happens when believers take what they receive in church and apply it in their homes, businesses, and personal lives. If they can develop a real, personal ability to hear from God, they will be equipped to navigate any challenge with confidence and faith.
